Syria, Israel's Northern Neighbor

There is a lot going on with Syria recently. An assassination attempt was made on Prime Minister Wael al-Halki. One of al-Halki's companions was killed along with five bystanders in the bomb attack. The bombing took place in the Mezze district of central Damascus. I shows that the Rebels have the ability to strike even in rather secure areas of the government strongholds.

There are many reports that the Israeli military bombed a chemical plant near Damascus on Saturday April 27. The bombing was reported by people in the Free Syrian Army but has not been confirmed by any official sources.

The Free Syrian Army says Israeli air force jets flew over President Bashar Assad's palace and bombed a chemical weapons site near Damascus, Maariv reported.

The report said Israeli jets entered Syrian airspace close to 6 a.m Saturday and flew over Assad's palace in Damascus and other security facilities before striking a chemical weapons compound near the city.  The Hebrew language daily said a Syrian army air defense battery positioned in the city fired at the Israeli jets, but the aircraft left Syrian airspace unscathed. FSA rebels posted a video showing smoke rising from the headquarters for chemical weapons.  There were no reports of the extent of damage or casualties.

Neither Damascus nor Jerusalem responded to the report.

Hezbollah Fighters
The Israelis are becoming very concerned about the situation in Syria. Ron Prossor, the Israeli Ambassador to the UN warned the security council that Hezbollah was near to getting control of Syria's chemical weapons. Member of the Knesset Binyamin Ben-Eliezer Stated that Hezbollah was already receiving chemical weapons from Syria. Hezbollah is now saying that they may intervene in Syria in support of Assad. It is actually an open secret that Hezbollah members have been fighting in Syria for some time.

It is these things that may have prompted Iran to warn Israel that they would be “wiped out” if they attack Hezbollah.

A top general in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps on Sunday warned Israel that any military action against Lebanon and the Hezbollah terror group would result in Israel’s destruction.
In an address in the southwestern Iranian city of Shahrekord, Brigadier General Mohammad Hossein Sepehr claimed that Iran now extends all the way to the Mediterranean coast, presumably an allusion to Tehran’s influence in Lebanon and Syria via its proxy Hezbollah.

Today, Israel called up its reserves for a military exercise on its northern border. The call up will continue until Sunday May 5 when the drill begins. All of this activity has tensions very high. It was set off by reports that chemical weapons have been used in Syria. President Obama has previously stated that the use of chemical weapons represents the “red line” that if crossed would trigger American Military intervention in Syria. Obama has not yet committed to military in Syria, but he seems to be gathering the support of America's allies and examining poll results to counter what is likely to be rather unpopular with the American public. The U. S. went to war in Iraq over intelligence reports of weapons of mass destruction. The similarities of Iraq with the current situation in Syria are obvious to anyone who is paying attention. I wonder where Barack Obama keeps his Nobel Peace Prize. Do you think he just keeps it in his dresser drawer?

Then like the cherry on top of a chaotic sundae, somebody shot a couple of missiles at a Russian passenger jet in flight on its way from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt to the Russian city of Kazan. The pilots took evasive action and the plane was not hit by the missiles. Russia has now asked its airlines to no longer fly over war zones. I think that is a smart move.

The past few weeks we have seen a lot of things coming to what appears to be a critical point with Syria.  Israel has tried to stay out of any involvement in the civil war.  They were not friends with Assad, but he was not openly aggressive toward them.  Israel may be seeing an end coming to the Assad regime and is trying to position itself for defense against whatever may take the place of the Syrian government.  They fear Hezbollah getting control of the chemical weapons and I don't think we have yet seen the extent to which Israel is willing to go to prevent that from happening.
